Detailed Comparison: Bertello Pizza Oven vs Ooni Pizza Ovens

1. Design and Construction

The design and construction of a pizza oven play a crucial role in its performance and durability. Both Bertello and Ooni offer well-built pizza ovens, but there are some notable differences.

Bertello Pizza Oven: The Bertello oven features a sleek and compact design, perfect for small outdoor spaces. It is made from high-quality stainless steel, which not only enhances its durability but also ensures even heat distribution. The Bertello oven also comes with a built-in thermometer and a heat-resistant handle for easy and safe handling.

Ooni Pizza Oven: On the other hand, Ooni pizza ovens are known for their modern and eye-catching designs. They are available in various models, including the Ooni Koda, Ooni Frya, and Ooni Karu. Ooni ovens are made from durable materials such as stainless steel and carbon steel. They are designed to be lightweight and portable, making them great for outdoor use.

2. Heating Performance

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a pizza oven is its heating performance. A pizza oven should be able to reach high temperatures quickly and maintain them consistently for perfect pizza cooking.

Bertello Pizza Oven: The Bertello oven is a wood-fired pizza oven that can reach temperatures of up to 930°F (500°C) in just 20 minutes. Its thick insulation allows for excellent heat retention, ensuring consistent and efficient cooking. Additionally, the Bertello oven is compatible with both wood pellets and charcoal, providing versatility in fuel options.

Ooni Pizza Oven: Ooni pizza ovens are known for their exceptional heat-up times. The Ooni Koda, for example, can reach temperatures of up to 932°F (500°C) in just 15 minutes.

3. Cooking Capacity

The cooking capacity of a pizza oven determines how many pizzas you can cook at once, making it an important consideration for larger gatherings or family meals.

Bertello Pizza Oven: The Bertello oven has a cooking surface of around 12 inches, allowing you to cook one pizza at a time. It also comes with a removable oven door, which helps retain heat and control airflow for optimal cooking.

Ooni Pizza Oven: Ooni ovens offer different cooking capacities depending on the model. The Ooni Koda 12 can accommodate pizzas up to 12 inches in diameter, while the Ooni Koda 16 has a larger cooking surface that can handle pizzas up to 16 inches. These ovens are designed to cook pizzas quickly, usually in just a couple of minutes.

4. Ease of Use and Cleaning

The convenience of using and maintaining a pizza oven can greatly impact your overall experience.

Bertello Pizza Oven: The Bertello oven is easy to use, with a simple setup and intuitive controls. It requires minimal assembly and can be ready for cooking in no time. Cleaning the oven is also relatively straightforward, thanks to its removable cooking surface and ash tray.

Ooni Pizza Oven: Ooni ovens are designed with user-friendliness in mind. They feature quick and easy setup, allowing you to start cooking pizzas in a matter of minutes. Cleaning is also hassle-free, with most Ooni models having removable parts and easy-to-clean surfaces.

5. Price and Value for Money

Pricing is an important factor to consider when comparing pizza ovens, as it directly impacts your budget and the overall value you receive.

Bertello Pizza Oven: The Bertello oven is priced competitively, offering excellent value for money. It provides a solid wood-fired pizza oven experience without breaking the bank.

Ooni Pizza Oven: Ooni ovens tend to have a higher price range, especially for their larger models. However, they offer exceptional quality, performance, and versatility, making them a worthwhile investment for pizza lovers who prioritize functionality and durability.

Why I Prefer Oonis

In the 5 factors listed above, any of the Ooni pizza ovens wins every time (except for the Frya, I’m not a huge fan of wood-only pizza ovens) over the Bertello.

If you’re going to buy a pizza oven, you must be pretty serious about making pizza at home. In my opinion, spending a little extra money to get an oven that performs better, looks better, and makes better pizzas is 100% worth it.

I like making bigger pizzas and I still find the larger Oonis to be plenty portable, so buying either the Ooni Koda 16 or the Ooni Karu 16 was the obvious choice. Personally, I don’t love cooking with wood, so I opted for the Koda 16 and have not regretted the decision.

If you’re the adventurous type, the Karu 16 is probably the one for you.

Still, if you’re on an exceptionally tight budget and don’t mind the way it looks, the Bertello pizza oven is a legit option. At the end of the day, it still makes great pizzas!

Final Word: Bertello vs Ooni Pizza Oven

Both Bertello and Ooni pizza ovens are highly regarded in the market, offering exceptional performance and quality.

The choice between the two ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you have limited outdoor space and prefer a compact oven, the Bertello oven might be the perfect fit.

On the other hand, if you prioritize quick heat-up times, versatile fuel options, and larger cooking capacities, the Ooni pizza ovens are worth considering.

In my opinion, 90% of people should just buy an Ooni – the hard part is figuring out which one. If you don’t know, I’d default to the Koda 16:

That said, there is some novelty to buying an oven with multiple fuel options, and you will get some unique flavors. If you’re the adventurous type and have the extra money, the Karu 16 may be the one for you:

Whichever option you choose, both Bertello and Ooni will elevate your pizza-making game and help you create delicious, restaurant-quality pizzas in the comfort of your home.
